How to install Oracle Express Edition on Centos/RHEL

Oracle Express Edition

Oracle Express Edition is Oracle Corporation’s free to use and distribute database edition. Which is available for Windows and Linux and can be downloaded free of charge from Oracle Tech Net. Linux RPM’s are also available for easy deployment on Linux servers.

Oracle XE offers (almost) all features you would expect the Oracle database to have. In addition, it also ships with:

  • APEX – which can be used to develop web-based applications
  • PHP language bindings

In this article we will be known the installation of Oracle XE in Linux.

Before we are going to install Oracle XE, we have to install libaio, bc, and flex packages.

[root@localhost ~]# yum install libaio bc flex

Now We can Download the latest version of Oracle Xe package from their official site.

wget http://download.oracle.com/otn/linux/oracle11g/xe/oracle-xe-11.2.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm.zip?AuthParam=1474432282_1e585ccb1b54b563a15ed3db316d7652

[root@localhost ~]#

Now Unzip the package by using unzip command as follows

[root@localhost ~]#unzip -q oracle-xe-11.2.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm.zip

Now change the directory to Disk1 by using cd command as follows

cd Disk1

Now install by using rpm command.

[root@localhost Disk1]# rpm -ivh oracle-xe-11.2.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm

   1:oracle-xe              ########################################### [100%]  
Executing post-install steps...  
You must run '/etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure' as the root user to configure the database.  
  
[root@localhost Disk1]#

Now run the configure file as follows

[root@localhost Disk1]# /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure  
  
Oracle Database 11g Express Edition Configuration  
-------------------------------------------------  
This will configure on-boot properties of Oracle Database 11g Express  
Edition.  The following questions will determine whether the database should  
be starting upon system boot, the ports it will use, and the passwords that  
will be used for database accounts.  Press  to accept the defaults.  
Ctrl-C will abort.  
  
Specify the HTTP port that will be used for Oracle Application Express [8080]:  
  
Specify a port that will be used for the database listener [1521]:  
  
Specify a password to be used for database accounts.  Note that the same  
password will be used for SYS and SYSTEM.  Oracle recommends the use of  
different passwords for each database account.  This can be done after  
initial configuration:  
Confirm the password:  
  
Do you want Oracle Database 11g Express Edition to be started on boot (y/n) [y]:y  
  
Starting Oracle Net Listener...Done  
Configuring database...Done  
Starting Oracle Database 11g Express Edition instance...Done  
Installation completed successfully.  

Now we are able to access sql plus command line as follows

[root@localhost Disk1]#  sqlplus /nolog  
  
SQL*Plus: Release 11.2.0.2.0 Production on Wed Sep 21 08:17:26 2011

SQL> SQL> connect sys/Password as sysdba  
Connected.
SQL> 

Now enjoy Oracle 11XE in our machine.
